Chapter Thirteen

We spent only a few more minutes with Olene. She told us that her parents lived just a few houses from her and that they would probably talk to us about the Thornes. After that, we said our goodbyes.

“What do you think, Ken?” Hank asked me when we reached his truck.

“I think we’d better find out for sure if she got stung by some bees,” I responded. “I also think we should visit her parents. If we work it right, they’ll probably let us know if Olene has really been sick, although I honestly believe she has been. She looks pretty rough.”

“She didn’t seem to know anything about Harlan being dead. I think there would have been some kind of body language from her if she was guilty of murdering him,” he responded. “Unless she’s an amazing actress, I doubt she did Stoker in. She definitely doesn’t like the Thornes, but her hatred for Harlan is off the charts. Still, I would have expected some kind of reaction from her if she’d killed him, and I don’t think she’d have been so open about her hatred for the guy.”

“I agree with you,” I said.

Then Hank got his phone out of his pocket and asked Siri for the number of the hospital in Heber. I waited while he was transferred from one person to another. Finally, he ended the call. “Nobody will tell me anything,” he said. “Not that I’m surprised, the laws being what they are.”

“Not to be critical, but you went about it the wrong way,” I said, hoping not to offend him.

“You’re probably right. What should I have done?” he asked.

“You should have asked what room she was in so you could visit her,” I said.

He grinned. “I get it. I would have been told she had been released, and we would have learned what we needed to.”

“Pretty much,” I said.

“Let me try again,” he said.

“No, let’s wait a while. You gave them your name, so I think that when we do try again, I should make the call,” I said. “Maybe we’ll learn something from Olene’s parents that will confirm what she’s told us.”

“Sounds good,” Hank agreed. “Again, you need to take the lead with her parents, Ken. You are the most experienced one here in homicide investigation, and even though you’re trying to figure out more about the Thornes and cattle thieves, I think you would agree that we need to rule Olene in or out as a suspect in Harlan Stoker’s murder.”

I agreed, and we set off again. Luckily, Johnny and Tillie Ferrek were both home. They appeared to be in their sixties. Both had gray hair, hers straggly, his thin and long. Johnny also had a long gray beard. They knew Hank from his involvement in Johnny’s case after he’d been badly beaten by Harlan Stoker. Hank introduced me as a private investigator who’d been hired by some ranchers. They invited us to sit and visit.

I began the same way I had with
