I almost came home last year, after bin Laden. I got a promotion and thought about taking a stateside posting, then decided against it. The war here continues; my assignments challenge all my skills and use everything I know, all that I’ve learned. I’m good at what I do and it is important to the success of all our operations. Necessary to keep Bose and so many other soldiers safe. At home, my skills are less useful. So, I stay. I write because I am about to disappear for a while. A year. Two? As long as it takes...

I remember telling you I wanted to make it right. I’m less and less sure of what that means. The more I live and work in this culture, the more decent people I meet who are just trying to survive. You may have been right, Mae. The violence has to stop somewhere, but I still won’t put my gun down until the other guy does...and I don’t trust that guy.

I heard through the grapevine that you and Bose aren’t married yet. I’m surprised. Is everything okay?
