Chapter Twenty-Four
Jayden
I stood guard out the front of the compound.
While I wanted to be inside and helping rescue Skylar and the others, I also recognized that someone had to stand guard and keep a lookout.
If DeLucaâs men intended to flee, I wasnât going to let that happen.
The gunfire inside had silenced after quite some time.
Iâd have been worried if I hadnât been connected via an earpiece and could hear the conversation amongst the men of Eagle Tactical.
Lincoln stepped outside first through the front door.
I lowered my gun, careful not to shoot him.
Skylar followed, holding Izzieâs hand.
Exhaling a sigh of relief, I was grateful that they were both all right. âIâm glad youâre safe,â I said.
Skylar dropped Izzieâs hand and threw back her fist landing a blow to my face.
âYou bastard!â Skylar shouted at me.
Okay, maybe I deserved that. While I hadnât known what Enzo would have done, I shouldnât have ever involved her in my mess. Iâd been selfish and irresponsible in bringing a civilian on board.
âYouâre right. Iâm an asshole,â I said.
She cocked an eyebrow.
Had she expected me to fight back?
I rubbed my cheek. It stung like hell, but Iâd survive. It was nothing an ice pack and a couple of aspirin couldnât cure.
Were my eyes playing tricks on me? Behind Skylar, a young brunette hesitated. Her pale blue eyes stared back at me.
âLexa!â I shouted to my niece and rushed forward, past Izzie and Skylar.
Lexa threw her arms around my neck. âUncle Jayden,â she whispered before the sobs wreaked havoc on her body.
I caught her in my arms, not letting her collapse to the ground.
âAre you okay?â It was a terrible question, the stupidest that I could have asked, and yet here I was, asking it anyhow.
âWe should get the girls into the truck,â Lincoln said. âWe donât want to be standing out here in case DeLuca brings in reinforcements.â
âAffirmative.â
Lincoln was good at taking charge and commanding a team. I followed his lead.
Skylar held Izzieâs hand and followed behind Lincoln as I wrapped an arm around Lexa, escorting her across the lawn, past the open gate, and to the other side, just beyond the road where the truck was parked.
âWhat about Daddy?â Izzie asked.
âYeah? Whereâs Jaxson and Mason?â I asked.
Iâd heard briefly over the transmission that theyâd stayed behind to interrogate DeLuca. I didnât know what they were capable of outside of a war zone.
Then again, when oneâs family was in danger, it meant war.
Iâd been down that path looking for Lexa.
âGetting information,â Lincoln said. He didnât further elaborate.
We rushed to the vehicle and threw open the back door, letting the girls inside first. Izzie climbed into the back seat with Skylar on one side and Lexa on the opposite.
âI want my Daddy,â Izzie said. She had trouble sitting still in the backseat.
The kid probably needed a car seat, which was in Jaxsonâs truck.
âHow about we play a game,â Skylar said. âI spy with my little eye something yellow.â
âThe sun!â Izzie squealed.
Skylar laughed. âYes, your turn.â
Lexa reached for my arm as I stood just outside the truck at the door, keeping watch.
