My whole body aches and it's everything I can do not to camp out in the bathroom and avoid people. I shuffle up in the bed and lean against the wall, but even that's almost too much effort.
I groan and rub my temple, already hoping the world will swallow me up and I can die rather than put up with this.
The door swings open and Nik walks in with Matia on his heels. She bounces up onto the bed and goes onto her back, waving her feet in the air and demanding scratches.
At least that won't take too much energy on my part.
I absentmindedly do that, glad for the slight distraction from how awful I'm feeling and the chance that my stomach wants to empty itself again.
"How are you feeling?" Nik asks as he hands me a steaming mug of what I hope is tea.
I take it from him and take a sniff. Peppermint. The perfect solution to the churning within me.
"Awful," I respond.
He sits on the edge of the bed and puts a comforting hand on the covers over my leg.
"I'm probably pregnant or something," I mutter.
Nik rolls his eyes. "You're not pregnant."
"How would you know?"
He raises an eyebrow and tries not to look too amused. "How would I not know?"
"Are you trying to tell me that you've been tracking my period?"
"Not on purpose," he responds. "But we spend every night and most of our time together, and I'm well educated in anatomy, I'd have to be really dumb not to notice. Anyway, it's been less than a week, and we're careful with protection, the chances of you actually being pregnant are incredibly slim ."
I sigh. "Well, that's a relief." I set my tea down on the bedside table.
Concern crosses his face. "Were you really worried about it?"
I frown as I try to work out the answer to that. "I guess?"
Nik reaches out and takes my free hand in his. "You know we'd work it out, right?"
I bite my lip and nod. "But I don't even know if I want kids. No, you know that's not even true. I do know. I don't think I want kids." My heart pounds and my stomach churns, though the latter is probably due to the fact I've thrown up at least three times already, and even peppermint tea can't stop that feeling.
"I know."
I close my eyes. "Please don't tell me you've changed your mind about it." I don't even know what I'll do if he tells me he has, it's difficult to imagine our entire life goals changing so close to our wedding.
"I haven't," he says softly. "My feelings are exactly the same as they were last time we talked about this."
"That kids might not be for us?"
He nods. "But also that we're young, we're not bound by a decision we make today."
"Unless that decision is a child," I point out.
"We'll do what we always do, Ani. We'll talk about it and we'll make sure we're on the same page about it. Presumably every time you get a little bit sick.
