The Bible calls this “turning for home” repentance, which is at the heart of the Christian experience. It suggests a point in which we turn away from wrong thinking about God, self-centeredness, and sinful living to belief in God and submission to the Holy Spirit’s transforming work in our lives. The Greek word for repentance is metanoia, which means a transformation of the mind. It is a rethinking of one’s life that results in a change of heart and mind and direction.

Jesus’ first recorded words of his earthly ministry were “Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!” (Mark 1:15). He himself called his followers to repentance. He didn’t just say, “Believe in me.” In essence, he said, “Stop believing what you’ve been believing and start believing the truth about God.”

[To the contrary,] I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39
