The twilight fell, leaving the sky a deep blue black which made all of the carnival lights seem brighter and all of the noise seem louder, if that were possible. Mae was just finishing her burger when there were hoofbeats on the gravel road which she instantly heard even over the noise and screaming from the carnival and from the small stage with live music down at the other end. She looked up to see Star coming back, the picture of elegance in the lowering sun with his black carriage, black harness, and shining black coat.
And with his tall driver in black jeans, white Western shirt, and grey Stetson hat.
Ross pulled the carriage over and halted it beside the first of the wooden benches where several more people were waiting for their rides. Mae stood up and watched, cleaning her fingers with a couple of paper napkins as two women with more than a half-dozen toddlers between them stood up and began disembarking from the carriage.
Mae watched them closely making sure the toddlers didn't wander off and get too close to the horse. Eventually, all of them were out and the women had collected them, with most of the kids put back into waiting strollers and the smallest ones being carried.
"Train! Train!" the children cried, trying to look over at the carnival. "Train! Merry-Go-Round!"
The carriage tour had been quickly forgotten, it seemed, in favor of carnival rides, but Mae thought that maybe it had at least given those two moms, or grand-moms, or aunties, or whoever they were, a chance to sit down and be comfortable for the fifteen minutes of the trip.
As soon as the women and small children had gone, the next party stepped up into the black carriage. It was an older man and woman who certainly looked like grandparents, and with them were two girls of about nine or ten, and a boy of probably twelve.
As the new passengers decided where they wanted to sit, Mae walked over to the front wheel of the black carriage. "I'll bet that was an interesting trip," she said to Ross.
Ross looked down at her. "The carnival seems nice and peaceful after that."
"I'll be it does," said Mae, with a laugh.
"How did the race-driving go?"
"Too much fun. I can't wait until tomorrow."
"That's what I'm afraid of."
"Hey, want a break? I brought a ton of food back with me. And a cherry cola. Chloe's guarding all of it right now."
He glanced over his shoulder. "I wouldn't mind. We've been busy non-stop. Horses have all had water, but we haven't had much to eat or drink ourselves."
"Go, then. I'll take a couple of drives while you eat and then I'll spell Brandon." Mae stepped up onto the hub of the carriage wheel and then got all the way up to the bench.
Ross gave her the reins and stepped down to the ground. "Appreciate it," he said, and began walking back toward Chloe and the white bags full of cheeseburgers and fries.
"No problem at all.
