SAVE THE STALKS

If you live in a colder region, leave any flower stalks standing after the first fall frost so birds can feast on the seeds all winter, and wait until spring to cut back the plants.

DIVIDING A BEE COLONY

There are several methods of dividing a colony of bees. Probably the simplest is to remove four to six combs of brood, with the adhering bees and old queen, to an empty hive. Fill the remaining space of both hives with empty combs or frames with brood foundation. Move the new divisions, with the queen, to a new location. This may be near the old location, but preferably with the entrance turned at a right angle to the parent hive. The parent hive should be given a ripe (capped) queen cell or a new, young queen within 2 hours and no later than 24 hours after making the division. Dividing should be done during the middle part of the day, when many of the bees are away from the hive.
