THE first thing on Dekkard’s mind when he came downstairs on Duadi morning, again earlier than usual, was to see what was in the morning edition of Gestirn.

“There’s nothing about the Council,” said Emrelda.

“I wanted to see about the demonstration at Imperial University and whether they mentioned the trouble your station had with Southtown yesterday.”

“The demonstration’s on the front page. There’s nothing about Southtown.” Emrelda added dryly, “There wouldn’t be, unless it killed someone important or they burned a whole block or more, like happened in Rivertown.”

Dekkard could see that. He picked up the newssheet to read about the demonstration. A section of the lead paragraph summarized what he wanted to know:

… was the latest in protests against policies designed to restrict admissions …

Three Public Safety Patrollers were wounded, and one was killed when an unidentified person opened fire on the patrollers … patrollers returned fire and killed the man, who was not identified as a student. Five students were wounded, one seriously …
