CHAPTER 6

When they arrived, they found the garage open for business. Inside, were the two brothers who’d discovered their boss the morning following his murder. But Sally felt the men seemed a little subdued.

She and Lorne produced their warrant cards.

“We promise not to get in your way,” Sally said.

“Sure, we’ll leave you to it. DI Edmonds can run through where… it happened. We’ve got paperwork to sort out and customers to ring,” Sean said.

“Thanks. We might follow up with some questions later, if that’s okay with you?”

“It’s fine,” Chris Watts said.

The two men walked away and entered the office.

Helen led Sally and Lorne over to the murder scene. “It happened around here. You can still see remnants of the patch of blood we found. Pauline suspected Grant’s body was rolled into the inspection pit after he was murdered.”

“Do you know what time he was killed?”

“We believe he was here alone, working on a car that had a problem with it that the boys had failed to pick up on during the day. Grant insisted that he would complete the job and told the boys to leave at about six-thirty. Apparently, they closed the door behind them but left it unlocked.”

“So, the killer had access without needing to alert Grant.” Sally peered over her shoulder at the door. “Was the music on?”

“The boys said their boss refused to work without it.”

“That would explain how the killer managed to surprise the victim, if that’s what happened. Maybe they gained access and hid until Grant came out of the pit, perhaps to fetch more tools for the job in hand.”

“That was my assumption as well,” Helen agreed. “The killer then carried out the deed and left via the door which was unlocked when the fellas got here at eight the following morning.”

Sally and Lorne walked the area.

“Was one of the injuries a bang to the head?” Sally asked.

“Yes, but Pauline admitted it wasn’t hard enough to kill him.”

Sally lowered her voice and asked, “What did the brothers have to say?”

“In what respect?” Helen replied, confused.

“I’m presuming you asked them about any likely suspects?”

“Ah, sorry. Yes, I did. I interviewed them separately, and they both told me the same. That Andy was a likeable man, never had any issues with customers paying for the work they’d had done.”

“Did you ask them if they’ve seen anyone hanging around lately? Or if Andy had mentioned if he’d fallen out with a neighbour or something along those lines?”

“I did. I asked all the usual questions, and neither of them said anything untoward had happened to Andy, not that they were aware of.”

“Okay, what about the owner of the vehicle he was working on?”

“Nope, the same. He collected the car the following day, or at least tried to. I was here when he showed up. He was upset by the news and agreed to come back to collect the car. The twins said he was a decent chap, had been bringing his car here for years to be serviced and if anything went wrong with it in between.
