Wednesday

It was nearing midnight, and Melanie’s mind was still racing from today’s encounters. Anthony, what the hell was that? Since meeting him, this was the weirdest he’d acted. Then there was Calvin’s arms and eyes changing. It was keeping her up, and she could barely close her eyes before they popped open again. Weird things were happening to the people in Coryville, and someone knows what’s going on and was trying their best to keep it from her. The anticipation was too much to subdue, and Melanie wasn’t that person to subdue herself. She sprung out of bed and quickly scurried over to the dresser, grabbing a hoodie and a pair of jeans. Destination: Grant’s Fishery. Her intuition nagged at her, telling her to take a visit there.

Melanie parked her car in an abandoned lot across the street from Grant’s Fishery. Dressed in dark-colored clothing, she figured this would help her blend in with the darkened sky. The fishery looked quite different at night, almost run down and abandoned and eerie. The hushed sky didn’t make it any better. Beyond the building, she could see seven boats parked by the pier. Each one had ‘Grant’s Fishery’ painted across them, accompanied by a number, from one to eight. However, boat four was missing.

“Interesting,” she mumbled.

Melanie crept onto the pier, observing each boat as they bobbled along. Waving waters tapped the sides of the boats. A scan of the area and she didn’t see anything unusual. But she wasn’t an expert on boats and judging by pictures she’d seen of fishing boats, they all looked normal. Until she got to boat seven, parked at the end of the pier. Boots and clothing were scattered on the deck. She took a few steps further and saw a bottle of some dark liquid sitting just beyond the steering wheel. The bottle looked familiar. She’d seen Wayne with the same bottle two days ago. Something abnormal was obviously happening here, and her curiosity got the best of her and she got closer.

A loud thump cut the silence. Melanie spun around but saw nothing. The insides of her stomach churned. Those instincts kicked in again, and she felt a sense of being watched, but not how Anthony watched her.

A low splash rang out in the distance. Something’s in the water. Her mind stuck between not wanting to abandon the investigation and listening to the churning in her stomach telling her it was time to go. Turning on her heels, she quickly headed back toward the fishery. The churning had won, no need to see what was lingering in the water. Another thump and the pier rumbled under her feet. Melanie froze in fear; heart pounding against her chest, in her eyes, and down to the soles of her feet. Someone was behind her and drawing closer. Melanie scampered toward her car, but the faster she walked, the more the pier vibrated behind her. They were coming for her and gaining fast. One step for her was two steps for them, she gulped and remembered she left her gun in the car.
