CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

She pulled her phone from her purse, but there was no cell service down in the ravine. So she had a dire wolf carry her up to the rim where she watched the sunset as she spoke with Mini the minotaur mechanic. He had claimed to be working on an automobile, and the conversation was brief. And odd. Afterward, she rode back down to her uncle’s cave.

Now she was standing in the war room again. Everyone stood instead of sitting. Maki-Mae and Noff were there too.

“Hey, you two,” Maine greeted them.

Maki-Mae smiled. “I have concluded my shamanistic ritual in one of the cave branches.”

“Ooh, and I was helpin’,” Noff yipped a little too excitedly.

“How did you help, exactly?” Maine asked.

“With the disrobin’ and body paintin’, of course.”

Right. This wasn’t her stepmom’s first naked shaman ritual or whatever it was. “Did you, um, find what you were looking for?”

“Yes,” Maki-Mae said. “A way to defend ourselves from the archangel’s powerful magic. First, let us hear what you found out from Mini.”

Hm. That sounded promising. Nodding, Maine addressed the whole room. “Mini did confirm that there is a secret Labyrinth under the labyrinth. The Labyrinth’s core is called the Lost—and it is the safest place in the world. There are several secret entrances to the Labyrinth hidden and locked with a special key.”

“What’s the key?” Noff yipped.

“A minotaur.”

Noff whined. “Yeah, shoulda known.”

“What else did you learn?” Joffrey asked.

“Mini…was acting a bit strange. He said he’s only been there once and couldn’t talk about it over the phone. Said he could only talk about it in person. I’m to meet him at the Sacred Sourdough tonight after it closes.”

“What?” Noff asked. “The big lug couldn’t tell you over the phone?”

“He said it was privacy issues. I don’t know. He seemed skittish.”

Joffrey raised a leg and placed his foot atop the stone table. “So you have to go to Rainwater to see him in person? That’s dangerous. I’m not sure we should take that risk. The Corruptor has minions everywhere.”

“What if this is a ploy?” Zombie Icarus said. “What if this Mini the minotaur is the demon’s servant? What if this is a trap to reclaim one of the demonic weapons?”

“Mini is harmless,” Maine said. “Mostly. I mean, he’s afraid of gremlins.”

“Hey, gremlins have sharp teeth,” Cupid said.

“I don’t like it,” her uncle said.

“Don’t worry—I’m a troll,” Maine said. “Besides, I won’t be alone. I’ll have my bodyguard with me.”

Noff blasted up onto Maine’s shoulder. “Damn straight. Now let’s go get some pie!”

Maine’s stomach growled. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d eaten.

“I’m going too.”

Everyone turned their heads to look at the latest speaker. Sage stood in the main tunnel, leaning against the wall. His clothes and skin were no longer as muddy as they had been and his eyes were full of energy.

“Sage, are you okay?” Maine said, hurrying over to him.

His smile warmed her. “Never been better. Although I could use a shower.”

“You’re not still seeing little green men parachuting from the sky…”

“Nope.
