Chapter Nine

After a week and a day in their guest room, Marsha was allowed to return to her home. There had been no mention during the week about the $1500 credit card charge Joan had covered. Actually, there hadn't been much conversation at all. Once her car was cleared from the investigation and returned to her, she had her own transportation even though she couldn't return home. Alen and Joan would leave for work in the mornings before she came out of the guest room. When they came home in the evenings, she wasn't there. She would come in as or after they were going to bed. Which obviously raised even more questions. When Joan got home that afternoon, again, Marsha's car was gone.

But there was a note on the kitchen counter. It simply said, Thank you for your hospitality in this difficult time. I'm allowed to return home now; I'll talk to you soon. Marsha.

Joan called Alen. He didn't answer and she left a message, not because he would listen to the message before he called her back. In fact, she knew he wouldn't. But it just made her feel better to say it out loud.

"The mystery woman has returned to her home. We have our house back to ourselves. I'm cooking dinner for us. Please come home soon."

As expected, he did call her back, before listening to the message.

"Hi, Sweetheart, what's up?"

"Marsha went home. We have our house back. Can you come home early? I'm cooking your favorites. I really need to spend some time with you."

"I'll do my best. I love you sweetheart. I think the case is about to break open."

"I love you too, Honey. I'll be glad when you can tell me what's going on."

Fifteen minutes after Alen hung up with Joan, his phone rang. The call was from an unknown caller.

"Sheriff Arny," he answered.

"Sheriff, this is Detective Olsen with the CCPD. We met at the Colfax home."

"Yes, Detective. How can I help you?"

"Could you come by the station, I'd like to chat with you?"

"Sure. Any particular time?"

"Now would be good."

"I'll be on my way then."

Alan was excited. Though he talked to Joan like he was working the case of George's death, he really just sat in his office, frustrated all day. He worked to release that frustration before returning home to Joan every evening. She assumed he wasn't telling her anything about the case, because he never talked to her about an ongoing investigation. He knew some officers and lawyers and probably judges too talked to their spouses about cases. But they really weren't supposed to. He was glad that was a rule he always followed. Because now he didn't have to explain to Joan that he didn't know anything. Nothing about the investigation. He would pass on his questions to his deputies. But the reality was, they had no jurisdiction in this case. If they were investigating and looking into his concerns, they weren't reporting back to him. He could have pulled rank,
