Chapter Fourteen

I mentioned it again to Geoff, but he told me it wasn’t a good idea to try and talk to them. As long as his father held the king and queen hostage, none of the dryads would fight back. They were more likely to go and tell my father than help us. No one thought he could be beaten. Maybe after we saved the king and queen, some of them would fight on our side.

When we got past the dryad’s houses and walked into the clearing, I couldn’t find the king and queen.

“Where are they?” I asked.

“They are always here,” Geoff said. “My father must be worried. He probably took them to a more secure location. We will have to find them. It will be harder since he knows I am on the loose.”

“Do you have any ideas where they would go?”

“There are a few different places he may have taken them. Instead of us all going to the same place, let’s split up. I can get to the harder places easier and faster by myself.”

“Where should we look?” Richard asked.

Geoff gave us directions to a secluded cavern where his father sometimes took prisoners when he didn’t want anyone to know what was happening to them. He had taken the king and queen there before, during the war with the free earth elementals.

He warned us not to send Mauevene anymore. If his father was still worried that we were here, he would have special traps in place. We would need to keep an eye out for them.

He also gave us the key, telling us to save the king and queen if we had a chance. I could make them invisible, but he couldn’t, so even if he found them, he wouldn’t be able to rescue them. If he found them, he would find us so we could save them.

We split off from Geoff and continued past the collared earth elementals. We heard them whispering to each other as we passed. They were wondering where the king and queen were. Many sounded hopeful. Rumors were spreading that the free earth elementals were starting the war again to free them. Others weren’t as hopeful and thought the king was dead.

When we reached the path to the cavern, I noticed a slight glimmer on the ground. I closed my eyes to concentrate and saw the entire path was lit up with magic. It was one of the traps Geoff’s father must have placed. I directed my friends to walk through the woods around the path, making sure there were no other traps along the way.

We reached the cavern entrance, and I wasn’t surprised to see two dryads standing guard. They were watching the path and occasionally looking at the trees. The spell ended before the cavern, and I wondered why. If Geoff’s dad was strong enough to create the spell for the entire path, why would it stop before the cavern?

Richard started to move forward, but I stopped him. “Something’s wrong. This doesn’t make sense.
