Chapter Ten

“So, I take it we’re not going out this time?”

Amy stood at the door in her favorite nightshirt—the one with Maxwell’s equations on it. “How’d you guess?” She stepped aside so Derrick could enter. “I did order pizza though. I hope you like pepperoni.”

“I do.” As he walked past her, Amy caught a whiff of him. Fresh and clean. Mmm. “You must not have good news for me,” he continued as he sat down on the worn couch.

“Again, how’d you guess?”

“Well, in this profession you learn how to read the subtle signs people give off.” The corners of his mouth turned up slightly.

“I’m sure.” She plopped down beside him. “Ugh.”

“So tell me.”

“Well, it was going good. Great, in fact. I mean, I did say a couple of ridiculous things. Oh, and there was an incident with a pot sticker.” Derrick raised his eyebrows. “Don’t ask. But all in all, we were having a lot of fun talking about Star Trek and stuff. There was even spontaneous hand-holding and an almost kiss, and then…”

“And then what?”

She sighed. “And then his cell phone rang, and it was her.”

“Her who?”

“Her. Melissa.”

“Okay.” Derrick shrugged. “And?”

“And? And? And we were about to kiss when he took her call. And he was setting up his plans for tomorrow—I mean, today.” She glanced at the clock. It read 8:42 p.m. “In fact, he’s with her right now at that concert probably finishing the kiss that was meant for me, touching her with those big, warm hands of his and—”

“Okay, stop.” Derrick reached out and touched her bare knee. The gentle firmness of his fingers stopped the flow of words more effectively than his verbal command. “What happened after the phone call?”

“I left.”

“You left?”

“Yes. I left.” She crossed her arms. “I just got up and left.”

Derrick withdrew his hand, much to her disappointment. “Well, what did you say?”

“Not much. I told him I was tired and I had to go.” Derrick’s face was blank. “What?”

“You let her win again.”

“What?”

Derrick threw his arm over the back of the couch. “You let her win again.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Amy, remember, this is a competition. Melissa is playing to win. You aren’t.”

She uncrossed her arms and let her hands rest in her lap. “What should I have done?”

“Well, finish the kiss, for one.”

“What?”

“Yes. As soon as he hung up, you should have planted that shit right on him.”

“Just like that?”

“Just like that. Make him forget about Melissa and the concert and remember why he said yes to a date with you in the first place. Get all sex goddess on him. You have it in you, you know.” He winked.

“But I couldn’t.” She picked at the tattered cushion. “I felt so ignored.”

“I’m not saying the dude handled the situation well. If it had been me, I would’ve let it go to voice mail. In fact, I would’ve turned the ringer off before I even picked you up.”

“We met at the restaurant.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yeah.” There was a sharp knock. “That’s the pizza.
