The image of a girl in a lace cap with wings. A miraculous servant or Sister Mercury. Her profile, her gestures once elusive now expanding in perfect miniature. He called for tea which was a long time in coming. He laid back and thought of his uncle’s house and the drawing room washed in violent light. In the garden, a girl with an umbrella turning. He felt a bit ill and the tea was tepid. He pressed the damp bags against his closed lids and fell into a series of stills, a pale orchid crushed by a hand paler still, a girl without a jewel offering her naked neck. Desire, a liquid, trickling her throat, her breast, sliding her open knees. He stood in the wilting shadow. Her weeping filled him with revulsion mixed with love. A love that only Cupid in mischievous sleep could muster. And only M in cruel awakening could master.
