Chapter Fourteen

When Caitlyn got to Mr. Jameson’s booth, the man with the small coin store in Waikiki, he was busy trying to juggle four people at once. She watched from a distance as he had to keep an eye on the pieces he had out, while answering questions from the others.

Watching the hands and movements of one customer in particular, Caitlyn barely noticed the woman slip something into her purse. It was lightning quick and very subtle, but it happened. A coin had been shoplifted.

Even before she got to the booth, she called Officer Brunell, who was working as a plain clothes officer at the show. There were two of them there that day, him and one on loan from the central station.

“Shoplifter at booth 112. I need you here, now, Brunell.”

The woman was just stepping away from the booth when Caitlyn got there. She corralled her and the man she was with back in the direction of Mr. Jameson’s booth.

“Not so fast,” she said to them. “I think you have something to pay for.”

The woman yanked her arm free from Caitlyn’s grip. “What are you talking about?”

“I saw you drop something into your purse, and you’re either going to pay full price or you’re going to jail. Take your pick.”

“Are you a cop?” the woman demanded.

“Caitlyn Nakamura, senior investigator for the Honolulu PD. Do yourselves a favor and get that coin out.”

“I have no coin!” the woman demanded. She even started taking things out of her purse to prove it.

“Not you. I mean this fellow here,” Caitlyn said, looking at the man with her. “The one you transferred the coin to while walking away.”

He took it out of his jacket pocket and slapped in onto the counter in front of Mr. Jameson. It was then when Officer Brunell showed up. While he cuffed the man and woman, Caitlyn called for a patrol officer to come get them. Jameson didn’t care one way or the other about pressing charges, only glad he got his merchandise back.

“Funny,” he said once the pair were taken to the station and the small crowd around his booth started to dissipate. “I have things far more valuable here they could’ve taken.”

“What’s the value of it?” she asked. “So I can put it in my report.”

“Nineteen thirty-eight Buffalo nickels can range anywhere from five dollars to fifty thousand. They got a fifty dollar piece, one of the more common coins but in near mint condition. It was in a collection I acquired a few years ago. Had they tried bartering, I would’ve sold it to them for thirty-five.”

“Now they facing a night in jail and a fine of a few thousand,” Caitlyn said. “Have you heard anything about Peterson’s Sphinx?”

“He’s been making all kinds of excuses of why he won’t allow it to be displayed, mostly because he thinks the security here isn’t good.”

“He’s not letting on that he doesn’t have it?” Caitlyn asked.

“Not yet, but the organizers are starting to ask him about that. Once
