Chapter 12
Both men watched me with interest. I bit my lip, not liking the spotlight.
“Well, has anyone searched his classroom?” I asked.
Detective Preston’s eyebrows flickered. “That’s next on my list. You must be a mind reader. You want to tag along?”
I nodded. Why not? I might as well see this through.
“What about me?” Christopher asked, his voice whining. His head swiveled between the two of us.
My nails bit into my palms as I clenched my hands. Please tell him no. I didn’t think I could hang around him another minute. Something about him made my skin crawl.
Luckily, the detective didn’t let me down. “This is official police business. We’ll keep in touch and let you know of anything we find,” he said, with a no-nonsense dip of his head.
Christopher seemed to wilt before us, but he didn’t try to argue. We left him staring at the desk, with the detective giving a stern command that if Christoper should find anything, he needed to alert the police department at once, as it could be evidence for the murder investigation.
As I walked out to my van, I couldn’t help but glance over at Terry Brooks’ place. The driveway was empty and the windows dark with Emily gone. I checked out the tree. Detective Preston joined me.
“Hard to believe this would be at the center of all that,” he said. “Shame how depraved people can be.”
I nodded, stuffing my hands into my jacket’s pockets. It was cold, with that icy touch to the breeze that threatened a snowfall.
Detective Preston must have felt it too. He rubbed his hands together. “All right, quit dawdling. Let’s get going.”
Dawdling, huh? I bit back my retort and got into the van.
The trip to the school was uneventful to the outside eye, but my stomach clenched. I wasn’t sure if I was about to be a part of solving one of the greatest historical mysteries of the American Revolution: finding George Washington’s saddle pistols.
Would this be enough to prove there could have been other suspects besides Terry? Could Terry walk free even though he was the one who pulled the musket trigger? Or was my entire idea about to go down the drain?
The school’s parking lot was overflowing from all of the students’ cars. I drove around back to where I remembered the teachers had their own spots.
Detective Preston didn’t follow me, choosing instead to park in front of the entrance. By the time I had my van parked, and was hurrying up the sidewalk to meet him, he already had a crowd of kids gathered around his vehicle, interested to see why he was here.
As I approached, I heard him saying, “Why aren’t you guys in class? No, there’s nothing happening here that concerns any of you. Hey! You! Don’t be touching my car, or you better believe it will concern you.”
Mrs. Matthews, the principal, walked out. “All right, everyone. Excitement’s over. Get back to class.” She waited with her arms crossed until the last of the stragglers was through the door, then she stepped closer to the detective.
