Chapter 7

Zoe bit into a brownie and thought she might have finally perfected the recipe she’d found on Pinterest. She had attended a cooking class this morning, and today’s lesson was easy-to-make desserts. When the instructor presented them with options, she chose brownies because Colin once mentioned they were his favorite. After making two successful batches in class, she decided to try to make them on her own at home. No burned edges, no raw insides, and they even tasted like chocolate brownies, she thought happily.

She smiled to herself as she arranged the brownies on a colorful ceramic plate that she’d purchased from a thrift shop not far from her home and reminded her of one of her favorite Rembrandt paintings. Colin planned to stop over after work, and she wanted to surprise him with the brownies. She had dinner ready, also, but it was from a local restaurant, rather than something homemade because she was still trying to build up her confidence after several failed attempts at different entrees. When the Three Geniuses declined to lick the pan, she knew she still had several classes to go before her culinary skills improved to the edible stage for a main dish.

It had been almost a week since she had seen Colin, although they had spoken on the phone every day, at least briefly. The last time they had any lengthy conversation had been while he was on his way to his monthly poker game. Since then, their calls had been short, and she sensed he had been trying to get off of the phone with her each time. She hoped it was only her imagination, but she didn’t know.

Last Sunday, after he told her that their relationship was not meant to be long term and she told him that she accepted the challenge to convince him otherwise, everything had been perfect between them. The day had been rainy, and they spent it in bed at Colin’s suggestion, something she made sure to thank him for over and over throughout the day. She smirked as a shot of desire overcame her.

She covered the brownies with some aluminum foil and set the plate down on her kitchen counter. She wished she could figure out what might have gone wrong between them, hoping nothing had. He had left last Sunday night with a promise to call her on Tuesday because Monday had been his poker game. She hadn’t seen him since, although she was determined to remain positive and believe that they were each busy with work, and that’s all it was, nothing more.

The intercom buzzed and Zoe jumped, nearly knocking over a glass of water she had left sitting on the table. “There’s nothing to be worried about,” she murmured and pushed the intercom button.

“Hi, it’s Colin.”

“Hi.” She pushed the button to open the front door and noticed that her hand shook. She took a deep breath. Everything would be fine. It had to be. She dashed to the mirror to check her appearance for the last time.
