Treatment materials

As shown in the procedure diagram, the treatment consisted of two NS-NNS conversational sessions. Learners completed two communicative tasks, a ‘one-way picture description task’ and a ‘two-way spot-the-difference task’, in each session. Two versions of each task type were developed. In task administration, the order of the task types was counterbalanced, whereas the order of the versions was randomized. In the one-way tasks, pictures showed a scene before and after a crime occurred. The learner held the pre-crime scene and described it in detail to the NS, who played the role of a police officer. In the two-way tasks, each member of a dyad had a similar but slightly different picture and asked each other questions in order to find out the differences between the pictures. A screen hid the pictures from the view of the partner to create an information gap context. During the interactions, the NS provided feedback mainly in the form of recasts on a wide variety of morphosyntactic and lexical errors.
