Twenty-One
The following Wednesday, Magnus summoned him to the break room. There was consternation on his face.
âLook at this,â he said, pointing to the vending machine.
Tim looked at it.
âDo you see the word âChevyâ on there anywhere?â Magnus asked.
Tim said that he did not.
âThen why the fuck,â Magnus said in a seething southern drawl, âcanât it perform the simple task for which it was designed?â
âStill having problems?â Tim said.
âProblems doesnât begin to describe it. Damn thing jams every other time I try to use it.â
âMagnusââ
âI know,â Magnus cut him off. âI know what youâre going to say. Just stop using the machine. But weâre way past that, Tim.â
Tim looked at the big, backlit Pepsi sign adorning the front of the machine. It looked in working order, but clearly wasnât.
Magnus continued. âThe nearest corner store is three blocks walk. Whatâs a guy to do if heâs craving a cold one in the middle of the day?â
âWhy donât you just bring in a twelve-pack and store it here?â
Magnus shook his head. âYou know how precious fridge space is.â
Tim nodded. The rules were clear: bag lunches only, one per person, in a standard brown paper four-pound bag. No exceptions.
âAnd maintenance was no help?â
Magnus scoffed. âListen, Tim: when a man needs something handled, itâs most advisable to take matters into his own hands. Itâs really the only way. Now, I need you to help me.â
âHelp you what? Kick the machine?â
âAlready did that. I need you to tip it forward so I can dislodge the can from the chute. Itâs how these things work.â
Tim took a step back and examined the hulking apparatus. âWe canât be tipping these things.â
âItâs totally safe. I just need it tipped a little. Thereâs like nine YouTube videos on this.â
âYeah,â Tim said, âand then my fingers slip and it falls on your arm. Not worth it, man.â
âTim.â Magnus stepped closer. âI need this Pepsi.â
âSorry dude.â
âTimââ
âI gotta write content,â Timothy Dent said. He put on a regretful face and began walking away.
âNot cool!â Magnus yelled at him. âNot cool, man!â Tim heard him kick the machine again, then let out an agonizing yelp, either at the pain or the futility of it all.
