Scene 8

Day. MARIE-CLAIRE and her mean-girls are holding court outside in their “cafeteria”-- a tree.

GIRL #1 Today’s eggs are soooo horrible.

GIRL #2 I miss my Ma-maa’s bitoki.

MARIE CLAIRE You may not have to miss it for long.

GIRL #2 I will surely be missing it. Holiday isn’t for another...wha?...three months until Easter…

GIRL #3 Ugh.

MARIE CLAIRE Well, those little witches keep on spinning their tales we’ll have a holiday sooner than later.

THE GIRLS What do you mean?

MARIE CLAIRE The Diocese is going to close Kibeho College.

THE GIRLS Nooooo!

MARIE CLAIRE Yes!!

GIRL #1 But I like it here.

MARIE CLAIRE I thought you hated the eggs.

GIRL #1 I rather eat these runny eggs than cook a batch for my ugly brothers any day.

GIRL #2 You ever thought it was true?

MARIE CLAIRE Of course not!

GIRL #3 But it’s Anathalie. If it was just weirdo Alphonsine maybe not, but Anathalie, too? Anathalie prays her rosary seven times a day.

MARIE CLAIRE So?

GIRL #2 She’s the most devout of us all…

GIRL #1 If I had her ugly Tutsi teeth I’d be praying the rosary a million times a day.

GIRL #3 Eh-Eh! She Hutu.

GIRL #1 (Jeering) Well, she must be mixed then.

GIRL #2 It’s Alphonsine who started it all. Tutsi Lying Through Her Teeth Alphonsine. My mother was right. They are all liars. They think the whole world revolves around them. They don’t care what they do to hurt other people--

GIRL #3 Yeah...they are...selfish!

GIRL #1 So selfish!

GIRL #3 Yeah...that’s what my Da-da said. They think they are better than everyone.

GIRL #1 Smarter.

GIRL #2 Taller!

GIRL #1 Wiser!

GIRL #2 Prettier.

(GIRL #1 and GIRL #3, sucking their teeth, looking at GIRL #2)

GIRL #2 Well…they are.

GIRL #1 No, they’re not.

GIRL #2 Eh-eh!! My Da-da said that Tutsi women always have such a pretty face.

GIRL #3 Well, Marie-Claire has a pretty face.

(The girls look at Marie-Claire’s face.)

MARIE CLAIRE What are you saying?

THE GIRLS (Very quickly) Nothing.

MARIE CLAIRE Go get me another plate of eggs. NOOOOWWW!!!

(The worker bees hurriedly fly away to bring back honey for their queen. MARIE-CLAIRE pushes away the food. Actually, she is not very hungry. She eyes ALPHONSINE eating her breakfast quietly beneath another tree. MARIE-CLAIRE walks over to her. ALPHONSINE does not look up.)

ALPHONSINE You can have my eggs if you want.

MARIE CLAIRE Where is Anathalie?

ALPHONSINE Resting. The first few trips are always very tiring. But she will get used to them--

MARIE CLAIRE You know not what you do.

ALPHONSINE I am a human being. We never know what we are doing.

MARIE CLAIRE I hate you and all your “mysterious” talk. You’re not so mysterious, Alphonsine. I know you. I know your kind.

ALPHONSINE I bet you do.

MARIE CLAIRE If I was your father, I’d beat you black and blue--eh-eh, wait, you don’t have a father. I heard he divorced your Mama and left you to fend for yourselves. Must have been a rotten household. She didn’t know how to take care of a man. Maybe that’s what you’re after. A father. A Father Tuyishime.

ALPHONSINE I do not need a father--

MARIE CLAIRE You crave his attention, don’t you?

ALPHONSINE His attention is not the one I crave.
