CYPRESS HILL

Photographer Estevan Oriol first started taking pictures after his father, famed photographer Eriberto Oriol, gave him a Minolta camera and explained two concepts to his son: shutter speed and depth of field. Then he put his finger on the shutter release and said, “Push here.” He told his son, “You should be documenting all the stuff you’re doing. You know, you live a pretty cool life.”

The “cool life” Oriol’s father was referring to was his son’s experience as a club bouncer and tour manager for groups like Cypress Hill and House of Pain. As a trusted member of their inner circle, Oriol documented candid moments and had unprecedented access to the growing West Coast hip-hop scene.

“I shoot much like a documentary shooter, and because I was so close with Cypress Hill, I was usually in places where I could photograph them in their quieter moments between touring and stuff. One day, we were all outside of DJ Muggs’ studio where Cypress recorded a lot of their songs. Muggs was working with a new artist and he wanted me to take the photos for his demo.

“The alley was long and narrow, and I noticed that it would give this tunnel effect when I posed the guys there. I thought it would be great to get Cypress framed in between the long stretch between the buildings. I knew that shot would be classic.

“Much of the contact sheet is dedicated to this young artist who I don’t know whatever happened with. That happens sometimes, when you look back on a contact sheet and realize you dedicated so much time and focus on certain photos that never saw the light of day. I guess if this were during digital, I might have deleted those shots but there they are, right alongside the classic Cypress Hill images.”
