On my trip back to town I congratulated myself on successfully pulling off the ruse, though I felt a bit bad about having been dishonest. Still, anything to help Mr. Smythe regain his lost machine was worthwhile.

Holmes entered the room at a quarter past eight as I was once again reading the paper and wishing that I had had the foresight to bring a medical journal.
âAh, Watson,â he said energetically. âAre you well enough rested and fed for what might be an unpleasant encounter?â
âAs well as I will ever be,â I said.
âGood,â said Holmes. âI will change, and as soon as I am ready, we will depart.â
I reread the sporting scores as I waited, and Holmes was out in no time in his normal attire. We caught the attention of a cabman and made our way to a residential area on the edge of campus. We approached a small dwelling, no doubt a professorâs residence, and knocked. Holmes asked for a Professor Hill, which had me taken aback for a moment, as I was expecting this to be Professor Berkshireâs home. Perhaps Holmes had planned a detour. The servant took our names and led us in, where we were seated while she inquired of the master of the house. Within minutes a man, rather younger than the two university staff I had spoken to earlier in the day, with unkempt blond hair and a rumpled and yet finely woven smoking jacket, greeted us and asked us to come into his study.
âYou will have to forgive me,â said the man. âI was not expecting company, or I would have dressed. Do have a seat.â
âThank you,â said Holmes. âAs you have no doubt been told, I am Sherlock Holmes, and this is my friend, Dr. Watson. Have you heard of me, by chance?â
âNo,â said the professor, a little suspiciously. âShould I have?â
âUnless you have run afoul of the law, or read any of the more sensational mystery journals, there is no reason for you to recognize my name.â
âAh, well, that eases my mind.â
âI am a consulting detective, and I was hired to investigate a crime that took place near campus earlier in the week.â
âDear me,â said the professor. âNothing serious, I hope.â
âYes, it is deadly serious,â said Holmes. âA matter of both theft and murder.â
