Rafinesque’s medical career was short-lived, a temporary enthusiasm lasting only about four years, and by the early 1830s, advertisements and articles extolling the virtues of Pulmel had ceased to appear. He was once again involved with his first love, natural history and science, as well as ethnography and a scattering of other subjects—too busy to spend time writing lengthy, detailed consultations. This source of income dried up, while the irresistible pursuit of nature condemned Rafinesque to a life of penury.
