Chapter 15

Throughout her walk around the community center, Cora had searched her memory for the name Ruby Tallmadge. Had she been a child she had taught? Perhaps a visitor at her church or someone who had applied for employment at City Hall. She wished she had asked for an approximate age. She hesitated to share the contact information for employment with her friends when something sinister was niggling at her memory. Walking back to City Hall, Cora passed by the Caraway Cafe without stopping. She would have to check on a few things before she could share this potential hire with Dorothy Parish.

“Good afternoon, Saucy.” Cora smiled as Saucy crossed Paprika Parkway just as she approached the intersection at Fennel Street.

“Afternoon, Mayor.” Saucy stepped up on the curb and looked down at Cora’s sneaker-clad feet. “I hope you aren’t taking your daily walk at this time of day. This is the hottest time!”

“Oh, no. I’m just walking back to the office. I was down at the community center. I tried walking in the auditorium.”

“Excellent idea! You have plenty of room to walk around and it’s air conditioned.” Saucy threw his hands out to his sides and let them fall.

“Yes, but it’s boring.” Cora scowled. “I think I’ll have a hard time making myself go down there every day. I need to think of some way to liven it up.”

“Are you going to open it to the public? I might try that during the winter or on rainy days. I like a daily walk, but I agree. I don’t think I’d want to do it inside every day.”

“That’s the suggestion we’re toying with. I just don’t know yet. It was actually Amanda’s idea, and I was testing it out today. I think I’ll make it her little project to work out. Maybe we can offer some regular open hours for the public and you’re right, it would be especially helpful in the winter.”

“I was going to stop in your office this week,” Saucy said as he shuffled his feet. “I was at the market on Wednesday. Did you go by on Wednesday at all?”

“Yes, I ran by there at lunch, but I had to be quick about it.”

“I heard from some of the vendors that Sonjay is coming back. Had you heard that?”

“Yes. Amanda mentioned he was just coming back into town for a weekend trip. Then he’s off on the road again. It sounds like his career is doing very well.”

“Oh, I didn’t realize he wasn’t staying. I was hoping he was coming back to oversee the farmer’s market like we thought it would be from the start.”

“I know that was his original plan. He hadn’t known about the gallery showing opportunity when he contracted for the market. Why? Is there a problem with the market management?” Cora glanced towards Fennel Street when a rumbling noise distracted her. Seeing it was only the little blue car again, she turned back to Saucy. “Have you met the manager?”

“Bruce Turley. Yes, I’ve met him.
