LATER ON THAT NIGHT,Lynn remained at the house while Monroe and Brooke went off to the carnival. Lynn was thrilled that they managed to reunite without any bad blood between them. Lynn sat on the sofa in the living room, watching television. Jackson walked into the house following hours of being on the golf course and taking Macy’s son to the soda shop for some ice cream in Downtown Mayfield.
Jackson entered the living room. He saw his wife sitting on the sofa and gave her a kiss on the lips. “How is everything going with you?” he asked her.
“I’m fine. Aunt Belle is at the church playing bingo, and guess what else, Jackson?”
“What’s that, Lynn?”
“Brooke stopped by the house to drop off the apple pie her mother made and then Monroe showed up at the house. Now they both went to some carnival in town.”
Jackson was stunned to hear the news of Monroe going out on a date with Brooke. He took a gulp of his soda. “That’s incredible! Perhaps now he can get married and start a family.”
Lynn laughed. “We should be happy that Monroe is finally dating again. You know, sweetheart, being a lawyer isn’t all that easy. And no, I didn’t play matchmaker!”
“I ain’t say anything, Lynn, there’s no need to jump to conclusions,” Jackson responded, taking another gulp of soda. “You seem guilty.”
“I’m only telling you so you wouldn’t assume I played matchmaker.”
There was an unexpected knock at the front door. Jackson looked out the peephole and saw that it was Duran standing outside on the front porch. Jackson answered the door with Lynn walking up behind. “Duran, what brings you by?” he asked, bewildered.
“Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Wooden, I came by to see if Monroe is here,” Duran mentioned.
“No, baby, Monroe left on a date. He should be back home later,” Lynn told Duran.
Although Duran was devastated to hear that Monroe went on a date, Duran swallowed his emotions and smiled at Lynn and Jackson. Duran turned around and walked off the porch, heading directly back to his car, leaving Jackson and Lynn in a state of confusion.
“I wonder what that was about?” Jackson pondered.
Lynn shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. I guess Duran and Monroe were supposed to hang out together,” she assumed, walking back into the house.
Meanwhile, Jackson stood on the front porch watching Duran’s car disappear around the corner. Jackson tried to wrap his mind around Duran’s strange, unexpected visit to his home.
