For a few seconds, all I could do was pant for air, unconcerned with things like cold, pneumonia, or my grievous injuries. I wanted to sleep for months. I wanted a hot steak and a caesar salad. I wanted a hot cup of coffee or a warm apple cider. I wanted to see Silvia Del Castello, the fiery little Italian fashion mogul, naked. I wanted my bed.

Silvia naked in my bed.

I chuckled. Giggled like a mad loon. Distant sirens approached.

‘You still with us, Fossor?’ Jesse sounded distracted, and in pain. ‘You gotta get to shore.’

“Where’s the fire?” I was shivering. I got to my hands and knees and dragged myself towards the edge of the river. A steep embankment of slushy grass led to a street of nice-looking shops.

Must be Uptown, I thought. I wonder if they have good coffee anywhere around here.

‘You gotta reach Walt’s tower,’ Jesse said. ‘You let the cops catch you and you’re all good as dead.’

I used my shovel to push myself to my feet. I didn’t want to keep going, I didn’t know why I had to, but Jesse was right. The Breckenridge Building had coffee, right?

I made it a few dozen feet down the road before I was surrounded by vehicles with flashing lights on the roof that made my headache throb in sync.

‘Shit,’ Jesse groaned.

“Freeze!” A voice shouted. “Put down the shovel!”

Freeze? Freeze?! “I’m already fucking frozen!” I snarled.

“Stand down!” A familiar voice called out. I turned towards it and saw a pair of angelic warriors walking out of the glare of the sunlight.

One was tall, beautiful, a valkyrie of a woman with natural blond hair, a statuesque build, and eyes like impossibly-blue sapphires.

The other was an all-around good guy, an African-American rookie detective who wore an anachronistic tan leather duster like a badge of honor. It went well with his million-dollar smile.

The woman had a gun aimed at me. She liked doing that. Her partner put his hand on her arm and gently urged her to lower the gun.

“Easy, Lo.” The rookie cop said, and approached me, looking concerned. “Alex, man, you okay?”

My knees gave out, and I stumbled onto the road, my shovel smacking the street beside me. He was beside me a second later, kneeling in the slush with me. He put an arm around my shoulder.

“Jimmy. James Runner. Hey, man. Merry Christmas.” I chuckled again.

“He sounds drunk,” Loren growled.

I smiled at her. “Hi Loren. You look amazing today. Why are you at work?”

She flinched, and put on her best glower. “He sounds like his usual dickish self.”

“Naw,” I told them. “I have a confusion.”

“A what?”

I fumbled over the word. “Confucious. Contusion. Concussion. I have a concussion. And am injured.”

He frowned. “Yeah, I read the reports. I hate to say it buddy, but you’re under arrest.”

I sighed. The words sobered me out of my daze.

“Just take me somewhere warm, Jimmy. I’ve had a long fucking day.”
