The mounting evidence against me is astounding. If I didnât know for a fact that I am innocent in Mayaâs disappearance, I would be doubting myself by now. Austin must be regretting his decision to have faith in me.
The screenshots the police have of multiple online conversations between what looks like me and numerous different friends and family members over the past few days appear completely legitimateââeven though I had no part in them.
Pictures of the chats show me railing about how much Iâve always hated Maya, how sheâs ruining my big day, and how I plan to find a way to get even with her for always stealing my thunder.
Not only did I not say, or even think, any of these things, they donât sound at all like me. This person is a spoiled brat, and there are more misspellings and grammar errors than I would make if I was trying to type with my toes underwater.
Iâm appalled that anyone believed these self-centered, error-filled messages were from me. Of course, the person typing them sounds erratic and deranged. Perhaps the recipients figured I was losing my mind from the stress of my impending wedding.
In all honesty, I canât truly blame anyone for believing the threatening messages were from me. The hackerâs account looks just like mine with my profile picture and other information. They must have stolen my account log in information or created a duplicate account to pose as me, but I have no idea how to prove that to anyone.
Itâs mortifying imagining anyone at all seeing theseââlet alone close friends and extended relatives. The angry rants make me sound like a raving lunatic.
No wonder the police are after me. One of the screenshots shows me on a group chat with my two favorite cousins saying that Maya has always been a thorn in my side and that I wouldnât let her ârooinâ my wedding day no matter what.
The person pretending to be me had actually spelled ruin that way and italicized the last three words, which made the message seem even more dire and insane.
Now that Iâm thinking about it, several people had treated me strangely during the days leading up to my wedding, but Iâd chalked it up to my pre-wedding jitters and them wanting to tread lightly so I didnât turn into a bridezilla.
Turns out, me becoming a whiny, entitled bride was probably the least of their worries. They were concerned about me harming my own sister.
This entire situation is completely surreal. Anyone who knows me should realize that I do my best never to say or do anything that might hurt another person. The realization that so many people now believe me to be capable of making these vicious comments stings.
But what people think of me doesnât matter right now. The only thing that matters is Mayaâs safety.
When I finally look up from the computerâs screen, I realize Austin has been intently staring at me. Heâs probably trying to figure out if Iâm faking my shock over seeing these messages.
