The sixth point about the creation stage practice is the result, which has two aspects, temporary and ultimate. The ultimate result is the arising of the two form kayas. The temporary result has three levels: (a) at best, in this very life, you see the truth; (b) at the medium level, in your next life you become a chakravartin king; and (c) at the lowest level, you obtain a good rebirth as a human or a god.
Now we come to the sixth point, the result. This has two aspects: the temporary result and the ultimate result. The ultimate result of creation stage practice is the accomplishment of the two form kayas: the nirmanakaya and the sambhogakaya. This complements the ultimate result of the completion stage practice, which accomplishes the dharmakaya.
The temporary result has three levels. At best, in this very life, you see the truth. At the medium level, in your next life you will become a chakravartin king, or someone with enormous positive influence in the world. Chakravartins have the ability to bring peace to the world without the use of force. The lowest level of the temporary result is attaining a good rebirth as a human or a god.
This concludes Gampopa’s six points on the creation stage practice. All these points can be summarized into three stages of understanding. First, when you do the self-visualization, you find yourself being transformed into the deity, into an enlightened being. As you practice again and again, you feel the enlightened qualities increase.
At the second stage, you know that the self-visualization is merely an exercise. You understand that this process is a creation of your mind, just like everything else you experience. You are simply becoming habituated to the compassion, wisdom, and power of your own mind.
Third, since the deity is created by your mind, you recognize it as the radiance of the mind’s nature. The deity has the same ultimate nature as the mind: clarity-emptiness, which cannot be pinpointed. So, even while feeling that you are an enlightened being, you know that this is not something concrete or real. Enlightenment is as empty, or as unreal, as everything else.
These three stages show how the creation stage practice is united with the completion stage practice of Mahamudra. The further one takes the creation stage, the more ultimate wisdom manifests. When your understanding reaches a very deep level through this kind of practice, you realize the true nature of your mind, and therefore, you realize the true nature of everything. This is what makes the creation stage practice so profound.
