Chapter 20

On moving day, my mom, dad, and Jesse helped me. I didn’t have a ton of stuff, so it didn’t take too long, and I was lucky the house was already furnished.

Julie helped with the last trip while Jesse went to another mandatory Leyna meeting at a friend’s house. My parents wished me well and went back home but invited me over for dinner that night.

For the first time in my life, I felt independent, and the whole thing was so exciting. I reflected on my life and couldn’t believe I’d finally reached that point. I was sure I’d have a great life in Big Bear Lake, surrounded by people who loved and supported me. I was nervous but excited at the same time. I knew I’d have to keep up with my chores and laundry so I didn’t wreck the place or turn into a slop, and I would also have to learn to cook for myself, but it was all worth it to have a life of my own.

“This is gonna be great, Taylor,” Julie said from behind the huge box she was carrying. “You can make this house all yours.”

“I know. I can decorate it my own way and play whatever music I want. I even get to decide which shows to watch, and no one else can hog the remote.”

She laughed as she set the box down. “Yeah, I know. Your dad’s pretty hung up on CSI.”

I chuckled as we walked back out to the car to get more stuff.

“You know, you could even unpack in your bra and underwear if you want, simply because it’s your house. Heck, better yet, you could even vacuum in the nude.”

“Uh, that would suck,” I punned.

“Very funny.”

“I could, however, pig down a bunch of junk food with no one to witness or judge. I love the taste of freedom!”

“Embrace your independence, girl! Eat as many bonbons as you want!” Julie said as she picked up another box from the trunk. “So Tabby’s your benefactor, huh?”

I lifted two crates that were spilling over with junk. “She’s helped me get established, but I can’t let Granny pay my way. I want to make my own way in this world. I don’t want things handed to me. She’ll help me for six months or so, just till I get on my feet, and I’m gonna look for a job.”

“Are you going to try to get your old zoo job back?”

“I don’t think so, but I’m not sure yet. Who knows what I’ll be doing?”

“I got a job as a receptionist at the hotel. It’s just part time, but my mom runs the place.”

“That’s fantastic.”

“So, uh…are we are completely on our own then?” she asked.

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t belong to a pack, and neither do you…unless you plan to join Team Witch or Team Vampire.”

I smirked. “Why would I want to associate myself with a coven or pack?”

“Because then some immortals will have your back if trouble pops up.”

“Hmm. Well, Tabby’s family, and her team of researchers and her coven will look out for me, I’m sure.
