CHAPTER

Movie Mayhem

V and I bought our tickets and walked into the lobby, where a group of kids from Journalism stood around talking, including Brooke and Tim. Brooke waved when she saw us, but I pointed to the concession stand. There was no way I was walking into the theater without fresh popcorn. It was the perfect bravery booster. Also, it was delicious.

“I’m going to join them,” Vanessa told me. “Hurry, okay? Oh, and could you please get me some M&M’s?” She tried to hand me money, but I nudged it away.

“I’ve got it. It’s the least I can do,” I told her, and hurried toward the shortest line.

While I waited for the guy to put my order together, I glanced toward the entrance, watching for Stefan. When he came in wearing jeans and a green sweater, I almost fainted.

He was so dreamy. How could I have let my friends talk me out of my green sweater? Then Stefan and I could’ve matched!

I was debating the creepiness level of snapping a pic with my phone when the concession guy put the last item of my order on the counter.

Buttery, hot popcorn.

I leaned forward and took a deep breath, handing him my money. After he gave me the change, I tucked the money and the M&M’s in my coat pocket and tried to balance my popcorn and soda while grabbing napkins and a straw.

“Here, let me help.”

I glanced up as Emmett Elders draped a handful of napkins over my popcorn.

“Emmett! Hi!” I nodded at my popcorn. “And thanks!”

He shrugged and smiled. “It’ll keep it warm.”

“What are you doing here?” I asked. “Did you join the newspaper?”

“The newspaper?” he repeated, then looked around and saw the group of us huddled together. “Oh . . . no. I’m here to see a movie with my family.”

“Right.” I blushed. “Because regular people go to the movies too.”

“It’s not just a rumor,” he said with a smirk. “What are you here to see?”

“Stealing Ever After,” I said. With a sheepish grin, I added, “For the second time. Have you seen it?”

He shook his head. “Is it good?”

I held up two fingers, smiling. “Second time.”

It was his turn to blush. “Ha! Duh.”

“What are you seeing?”

He cleared his throat and in a softer voice said, “Um . . . Fluffy Monkeys Go Bananas?”

I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped. Or the echo it made off the walls.

“It’s not my choice!” he said, crossing his heart. “My little sister—”

“Heather!” Brooke called my name, and I almost dropped my popcorn. She beckoned for me, and I could see Stefan standing right beside her.

My stomach flipped.

Showtime!

“I’m sorry, Emmett. I’ve got to go,” I told him. “But enjoy your . . . fluffy monkeys.” I swallowed a laugh.

He grinned and waved as I walked as fast as I could without losing a precious kernel of popcorn. I handed Vanessa her candy and took my place next to Brooke.

“Do I look okay?” I whispered to her while Stefan had his back turned.

She nodded. “Start walking.
