The literary editor of the Irish Press, M. J. MacManus, an old comrade of mine who had been in the I.R.A., asked me to write a column for his newspaper, which I did for a couple of years. I got barred off it sometimes because I had too much to say against the clergy and the politicians, for it is owned by the President of Ireland, Eamon de Valera. I understand that although he could not read the column himself because his sight was going, he used to have it read to him.

However, M. J. MacManus was a very kind man and a good friend to me. When he died, as Eamon de Valera's biographer (the book was first published in 1944 and reprinted many times since) and literary editor of the government organ, his funeral was very widely attended.
