Chapter Fourteen
Baz stared at JJ, where she sat cross-legged on the kitchen island, her laptop sitting in front of her. She was leaned over, her fingers flying over the keyboard, lost in thought.
He couldâve watched her all day, every day. The woman mesmerized him.
âI really wanna know what happened to that girl,â JJ mumbled to herself. âYou canât hide her forever.â
He loved the way she talked to herself or her computer when she worked. It was fascinating to see how her brain processed everything she was dealing with. What was even more adorable was the fact she didnât seem to care who else was around, who might overhear. During their time together, heâd heard a number of things come out of her mouth, some that were questionable in polite company.
She mustâve sensed him watching because her fingers stopped, her eyes darting up. âWhat?â She sat up straight. âDid you tell me dinnerâs ready, and I didnât hear you?â
He laughed softly, turned back to the stove. âNot ready yet.â
JJ exhaled heavily. âI know this girl exists, but for the life of me, I canât find her. Iâve even got her name on the marriage license, so I know sheâs real.â
Baz stirred in the teriyaki sauce with the chicken and vegetables heâd combined. âWeâre not talkinâ about Ava March, are we?â
âNo. Her nameâs Shayla Andrews. Sheâs the underage girl Rivers was with back in the day.â
âMaybe she changed her name after they called off the wedding.â
âPossible,â JJ grumbled. âBut youâd think Iâd still find her.â
âAnd why are you looking?â he asked, turning off the stove and pulling the sauté pan from the hot burner. He pulled the lid off the five-minute rice JJ favored, checked to ensure it was done.
âIâd like to talk to her. Find out what happened. Thought maybe she could give me an idea of Rivers, what heâs capable of.â
That was the question they were all seeking an answer to. More specifically, Baz wondered whether or not Harrison Rivers was capable of murder. If so, there was a good chance this search for Ava March would result in a recovery, not a rescue.
After he dished the food on the plates, he motioned for JJ to join him at the dining room table. She hopped down with enthusiasm, singing his praises. Baz got the feeling JJ was happier with the fact that he cooked for her rather than what it was he made. He knew if he left it to her, she would eat packaged donuts or canned soup before making an effort on something with more nutrients.
âTake a breather,â he insisted. âWant some wine?â
âNot tonight, but thanks. I need to keep a clear head.â
âWater? Or tea?â
âWaterâs fine.â
While she sat, he got two glasses, filled them with ice, added water. When he returned to the table, he found she was waiting for him. He loved that she didnât dig in, preferring to share a meal with him.
It was the little things, he realized. And there were so many little things heâd learned about JJ over the past six months.
