“Well, that’s the last thing I expected to see there.” Ethan carefully picked up the knife with his gloved hands, and turned it over, then slipped it into an evidence bag.

“I know you had to have looked there the other night,” I said.

He nodded. “Of course I did. And so did the other officers.”

I shoved my hands into my coat pockets. “So that means that somebody brought the knife back and stuck it underneath the bushes. Why would they do that?”

“Maybe it’s not even the murder weapon,” Christy said. “Maybe somebody’s trying to throw you off by putting somebody else’s blood on it. It could be animal blood.”

I turned to look at her. “That’s a possibility too. I mean, why would somebody hold onto the knife for a few days, and then return it to the crime scene? Why wouldn’t they have cleaned it or thrown it out?”

Ethan looked at me. “Somebody’s trying to throw off the investigation. Because I know without a doubt that knife was not there when we investigated.”

I nodded. “I knew when I saw it that it couldn’t have been here all this time.”

He stood up and closed the evidence bag. “Thanks for calling me. I’m going to run back and get this sent off for testing.” He leaned over and kissed me. “I’m glad it was you two who found it and not somebody else.”

I nodded. “I was thinking the same thing. Who knows what might have happened to it if somebody else came across it.”

He sighed, looking tired with dark circles beneath his eyes. “It’s a good thing you two are so nosy.”

I shook my head. “It comes naturally to us. Oh, I talked to my mom and she invited us to dinner tonight. Do you think you’ll be able to make it?”

He looked up at the cloudy sky and then turned back to me. “For your mom’s cooking? I’ll be there. I just need to wrap up a few things at work, and I’ll let the chief know I’m leaving early. Or rather, I’m leaving on time.”

“Great. I can hardly wait.”

He wrapped his arms around me and kissed me again. I hated not having my husband home for dinner, so this was going to be my lucky night.

“Oh yuck, gross, can you two stop that?” Christy said when he kissed me again.

Ethan shook his head and released me. “I miss her because I never get to see her.”

“I know, I know,” she said.

He sighed. “Duty calls. I’ll see you two later. Try to stay out of trouble.”

“We’ll try, but we might not be successful,” I said as we headed to my car, and he headed to his.

Why did somebody think they could leave that knife here and expect that the police would believe they had just overlooked it? They might overlook some minor piece of evidence from time to time, but not when it was the murder weapon.
