1.d4 d5; 2.c4 e6; 3.Nc3 c5; 4.e3 Nf6. This game starts out as a Symmetrical Variation, but the symmetry is unbalanced when White captures at d5. 5.Nf3 Nc6. 5…cxd4 6.exd4 Bb4 is a transposition to the Panov Attack of the Caro Kann or Nimzoindian Defense. This is a perfectly good defense, if you happen to know it.

6.cxd5 exd5.

7.Bb5. The pin threatens Ne5 and gives White time to castle. As in the Spanish Game, Black can break the pin immediately by advancing the a-pawn.

For 7.dxc5 see Kurschner–Tarrasch in the Heroes chapter. There are, however, other moves to be considered.

A) 7.a3 is often seen, planning a capture at c5 followed by b4. That would be good for White. Black can advance the c-pawn, but let’s stick to our standard strategy and capture in the center. 7…cxd4 allows either recapture 8.Nxd4 (8.exd4 Be7; 9.Bb5 Bd7; 10.0–0 0–0; 11.Re1 Re8; 12.h3 h6 is solid for Black, Schultheis–Stegmann Postal 1982) 8…Be7; 9.Be2 0–0; 10.0–0 a6; 11.b4 Qd6 gives Balck a good game, for example 12.Bf3 Ne5; 13.Nce2 Nxf3+; 14.Nxf3 Ne4; 15.Bb2 Bg4; 16.Be5 Qd7; 17.Nf4 Rfd8; 18.Rc1 Rac8; 19.Rxc8 Qxc8; 20.Nxd5 Bf8; 21.Qd4 Bxf3; 22.gxf3 Ng5; 23.Qd1 Qh3; 24.Bg3 Qf5; 25.e4 Nxf3+; 26.Kg2 Qxe4; 27.Nf6+ gxf6; 28.Qxf3 Qxf3+; 29.Kxf3 Rd3+; 30.Ke4 Rxa3; 31.Bh4 Be7; 32.Rg1+ Kf8; 33.Kf5 Rf3+; 34.Ke4 Rb3. B) 7.Bd3 is another reasonable line. 7…a6 makes a home for the bishop at a7. 8.dxc5 Bxc5; 9.0–0 0–0; 10.Bd2 Re8; 11.Rc1 Ba7; 12.Ne2 Bg4; 13.Bc3 Ne4; 14.Ng3.
