‘Characterization’ it defines as being ‘to impart character’.

Let us stick with ‘the collective qualities or characteristics, especially mental and moral, that distinguish a person or thing’.

How do we know our characters? We need to know their collective qualities and characteristics. What kinds of qualities and characteristics can a character have?

A character can be kind, good, patient, impatient, irritable, morose, intelligent and much more. A person’s characteristics will be what makes them stand out from other people. It can be a combination of physical and verbal mannerisms. It might be the way they walk or talk. So good characterization will be writing that does this well; bad will be writing that does not do it well.

The second definition says a character is a person in a novel, play, etc. or a part played by an actor, a role. Characters are the people in a story but they are not people. We must not make that confusion. They are not real people because they are created by the creative mind of the writer and shaped by the editing mind of that same writer and interpreted by the reader and/or viewer. One mistake that people can make in writing classes is to discuss characters as if they were real people; as if they do what real people would do or say.
