After dinner, with Sisu ensconced in the main house along with the other younger pack members and guests, a large portion of the celebration relocated to the beach. Drawn in that direction myself, I followed the path that had been carved through a wide stand of trees running along the shoreline, feeling the thrum of power saturating the estate increase with every step.
I wasnât at all surprised that the pack had so carefully reclaimed and cultivated the land. And with power thrumming from every section of the property, warming my skin and filtering in to gently vibrate through my bones, I also understood why they gathered on the longest night of the year, and why they invited other Adepts to join them. Shifters fed their power into their land in small amounts continually and evidently could do so at even greater levels during their gatherings.
That was utterly intriguing.
The wooded area gave way to a rocky shoreline. The tide was low enough to expose a beach tucked at the apex of a cove. A bonfire had been built on the damp sand, surrounded by carved log benches set well back. Just beyond the fire, well within the reach of its blazing warmth, over a dozen shapeshifters in human form danced, even though no music played. Not in the traditional sense, at least.
Instead, the shifters whirled and twirled to the undulating natural power theyâd called forth under the solstice moon.
The full moon was two days past, but the waning gibbous was still a bright orb in the darkened sky. Even the nearly constant misty rain had seemingly given way under the pull and sway of the packâs magic.
Ahead of me, Ravine threw her head back and laughed. She wrapped one arm around Bradyâs, with Erin already doing the same on his other side. They darted toward the throng of dancers together. Everyone was already barefoot, though I wasnât certain where theyâd all left their shoes.
Other shifters and their guests were milling about, chatting with drinks in hand or lounging on the log benches. Even from the base of the path, the fire was almost too warm, though the evening was chilly. Those milling guests included Brendan Prince. The sorcerer historian had indeed arrived with Ravine, but after returning from parking the car, heâd thankfully been occupied throughout dinner, mostly talking with James and Crystal.
Other shifters and Adepts brushed past me. Iâd paused a couple of steps off the path. But before I could decide if I was going to strip off my boots and tights and join either of the groups, laughter drew my attention back to the dancers.
Bethany. She and two other female werewolves, all of them various shades of blond, were in the process of tugging a sweater over the head of a tall, exceedingly well-muscled male with light-brown skin â
My stomach dipped.
No, not just any male.
Kellan.
Well ⦠it was clearly hot for those dancing so near the bonfire ⦠but no one had warned me that clothing was optional on the beach.
