Try it yourself. Get to know a host. Find out what shift she works, and what days. Ask where she used to work. Inquire into her personal life—hobbies, children and grandchildren, likes and dislikes. Thank her personally for comps she’s extended after you enjoy them. Send her cards. Write a nice letter to her boss. Introduce her to your slot- or video poker-playing friends. Then watch her reciprocate.
Combining Slot and Table-Game Play
American casinos either combine slot and table-game play or they don’t. The following descriptions describe the range of combinations, from no combining at all to full combining.
• No combining—I know it’s hard to believe, but MGM Mirage, as well as other large casino companies, still don’t combine machine and table-game ratings into one comp account. If you play table games enough to get half a room and slots enough to get half a room, that’s what your host will give you—half a room. It’s a set-up that’s bad for single players, and even worse for playing partners. There’s a way out, but it takes a lot of legwork. You have to hunt down both a table-game host and a slot host to get your just rewards. If you like to mix up your games, the best move is probably to avoid these mixed-up (but in the wrong way) casinos.
• Mixed Systems—These middle-of-the-road systems use a split screen, which shows all of your activity and allows a slot host to make comp decisions based on slots and table games. A table-game host can give credence to machine activity, as well. Mixed systems are pretty good for the cross player, especially if you have a relationship with a host or two.
• Fully Integrated Players Clubs—Everything goes into one account and the comp points are totaled automatically for all games. In these clubs, hosts for machines and tables are often the same, particularly in the Midwestern markets. If you play a lot and hop from pit to machine and back, this is your best bet.
Whether your slot club of choice uses a mixed or fully integrated system, you will get cashback only for machine play. Over the years a few casinos have tried offering cashback for table-game play, but those pesky card counters and comp wizards whupped up on ’em so bad, they had to stop.
To find out definitively what kind of system your favorite casino uses, just ask your host.
