Chapter 15

Not all danger comes with a warning.

Native American Proverb

Problems Await

Sylvia Whitehorse had the day shift and had been given a briefing by Sergeant Douglas.

“Thanks, Eddie. Sounds like there was no way of stopping Mr. Kirk. Susan Thomas tried to get Mrs. Kirk to go to the women’s shelter. Do we know if she ever did?”

“Yeah, she stayed about ten days, then she called him after he got out of jail, and he begged her to come home. Said he’d stop drinking … oh, you know the routine.”

Sylvia nodded her head. “All too well. But most of the time we manage to get them help before it ends up like this. Any word on the woman across the street? Mrs. Brown, isn’t it?”

“Susan said that apparently it shocked Mr. Brown enough that he didn’t have another beer the rest of the night. Wouldn’t it be nice if something good came out a tragedy? One family might actually learn something from another’s misfortunes. By the way, the sheriff said to wait until today to contact Bledsoe and notify Jason.”

“Any word from the sheriff? He’s usually in by now.”

Eddie looked around the briefing room and back at her.

Sylvia looked at him and then around the room where there was no one but the two of them. “What gives?”

“Well, I reached him up at the Anderson place.”

“What time was that?”

“I’d say well after nine last night. Want me to check the log?”

“No. Maybe we could admit we’re spoiled that a man who could work eight to five, works more like six to whenever most days, and has done so for a lot of years. If he’s not here by eight, we’ll get concerned.”

Eddie nodded. “Whoa, far be it from me to interfere in the personal life of anyone, much less our beloved sheriff. I say more power to him if he …” He looked at Sylvia. “If he takes some time for himself.”

“That’s better.” She tapped Eddie on the elbow. “Come on, I’ll buy you a cup of coffee.”

“Deal. I have my last yard work of the fall waiting on me when I get home. Need all the help I can get.” They walked towards the break room. Roll call was thirty-five minutes away.

“So, did anyone call Bledsoe?”

“Yeah, I talked to the assistant warden. They’ll take care of notifying Jason. Sylvia, any worries about the powwow?”

“Wish I could say no more than usual, but we could find this quiet little community overrun with folks who think it’s their right to go where they want, when they want, and with no regard for anyone else. We’ll finalize the plan on Wednesday morning and then the sheriff will inform everybody of their assignments through the weekend. Anything you’re hearing around these hills that I need to know?”

“Oh, the usual. Folks worried about fights from those who see it as an opportunity to get the native population riled up. It sounds mostly like outsiders to me. Could be they met some of our finer citizens in juvie or Bledsoe.
