Moving Forward
Troubles play a powerful role in your level of satisfaction and commitment, and as it turns out, you need quite a few treasures to make up for the inevitable troubles you’ll encounter in relationships, jobs, and fulfilling long-term goals. Some troubles are a relatively small price to pay for a commitment that brings a lot of meaning to your life. Others are created by your negative interpretation of events—and that’s good news, because as you consider other “stories,” your experience of those troubles can decrease. However, some troubles are very real, and these require a response.
People respond to troubles with a variety of strategies. In some cases, you’ll realize the troubles associated with working for this company are too substantial relative to what you gain, and thus you’ll begin to look for other choices and ultimately leave. In other circumstances, you’ll speak up and actively work to solve the problem. You can use your voice constructively and discover solutions that improve the situation for everyone. Sometimes you’ll remain loyal to a relationship through internal choices like accepting perpetual problems and seeing the best in your partner. Finally, when it comes to a long-term goal, you might get gritty and vow not to let troubles stop you. Your decision will be based on the magnitude of the treasures relative to troubles, and will also depend on the impact of the next two elements of the Commitment Equation, contributions and choices.
