The following morning, I wake early and shower and dress as quickly and quietly as I can. Wanting to get my talk with David over as soon as possible, I leave Harper sleeping soundly in bed and head downstairs to call my best friend.

Hands slightly clammy, I hit David’s number from my favorites list.

It rings only twice before he answers, “Vince. Thank God.”

My spine straightens as the relieved tone of his voice puts me on high alert. “What’s happened? Has Elliot found the blackmailer?”

“He has. It’s Reece Meyers,” David says.

I don’t know if I should be shocked or not. Reece Meyers is David’s biggest competitor and the fucker is known to play dirty. Even so, I never thought he’d go as far as threatening Harper. That’s a new low, even for him.

“I assume Elliot has sent the information over to the FBI, and they’ve already made an arrest?”

“Not quite. Meyers’s fucking vanished, but not before he relayed one final message telling me that he’s sent a team to take out Harper.”

My stomach drops all the way down to my feet. “Fuck. Does this team know where she is?”

“Yes. It turns out that guy she went on a date with—Holden something?”

“Holden Braddock?” I supply, gritting my teeth as anger surges through my veins. “What did that motherfucker do?”

“He’s working with Meyers. The date was a setup. They were gonna grab her that night until you came along. Unfortunately, you foiled his plan, so he planted trackers on both you and Harper before you escorted her out of the restaurant. But they lost you after your flight.”

“Fuck. Fuck! Why didn’t you call me sooner?”

“I didn’t know which line was secure. Elliot and I have been working all night to find a safe way to contact you. I’m headed to you as we speak, along with Elliot and your best guys. But we’re still at least an hour away, and I don’t know when Meyers’s men are set to arrive. They could be closer. You and Harper need to get to safety.”

My line is definitely secure, so that must mean Elliot has confirmed David’s were compromised, and that’s how they found us. Doesn’t fucking matter. All that matters is that a team of killers—who knows how many—is on their way here, right fucking now.

I just got Harper in my life the way I want her, the way I need her. No one is going to take her from me. I’ll fucking kill anyone—everyone—who even thinks about touching her.
