The next twelve hours passed in a blur. It seemed like April didn’t even stop crying in her sleep. The hospitalisation had ripped her out of denial about her mother’s condition. She hadn’t admitted to Adam that her mum had cancer until that night. The doctors didn’t think the woman would make it back home.

Adam was having a hard time keeping it all together. He desperately wanted to make April feel better, to make up for what he had done to her. What he had done at the worst possible moment for her. But he didn’t know what to do. This was outside anything he had ever experienced. He felt helpless and worthless.

April was finally sleeping somewhat quietly, and Adam had come out to the lounge room to think. He wasn’t doing much of that, though, just staring into space as he sat sprawled on the lounge room floor. He barely noticed when Jay entered the room behind him.

“Figure you guys are sticking round for a while longer,” Jay said.

“Yeah. April wants to be here when…” Adam sighed.

“I heard a bit of what you guys were saying last night. Her mum’s really… dying?”

“Yeah. Jay, about yesterday—”

“Don’t. Just forget about it.”

“Forget about what?” April said, moving into the room.

She had looked sound asleep when Adam had left her. Adam must have been wrong about that, or he had been staring at the wall for longer than he’d thought.

“I can’t remember,” Jay replied. “Jeez, you really know how to sneak up on people.”

“What’s with the bag?” April asked.

Adam hadn’t noticed that Jay was holding a duffel bag until April asked.

“I’m going up to see Mum for a couple of weeks.”

“Why? Is she dying?” April said it without the snarky tone she usually reserved for Jay. She just sounded tired.

“April, you don’t want me here. I don’t want to be here. Let’s just leave it at that.”

“What about Woolies?” Adam asked.

“I had the time coming, and Kevin said he’d cover. I’ll see you around. Or not.” Jay headed towards the door, then turned back. “Look, April, I know this isn’t going to mean much, but I feel bad for you. If there’s anything…” He trailed off, then left without finishing the offer.

“I’m gonna go to the hospital,” April said.

“Want me to come with you?” Adam asked.

She shook her head, cried, and went back into the bedroom. This time Adam decided to go after Jay instead. If you could even call it a decision. Adam was running on so little sleep, it felt more like an instinct.

Adam caught Jay just before he pulled out of the parking lot. He knocked on the window, and Jay rolled it down.

“You’re really leaving?” Adam asked, a panicked edge to his voice.

“Yeah. I think it’s a good idea,” Jay said.

“You always do this. When there’s a problem, you just piss off.”

“She’s your problem, not mine.”

“After what happened—”

“Especially after what happened.”

“But, Jay… I don’t know what to do.”

“Do you honestly think I can help you with this?”

“I don’t know what to do,” Adam said again.
