Chapter Thirteen

Carter poured grain into the horse’s bucket. The horse had earned it. She was a tough one, but she made progress today. With progress came a hard day’s work, for them both, but especially her.

Carter patted her neck. “You’re a good girl. Yeah, you are. You earned every oat. Having my big ass on your back.”

Carter probably had a bruise on his ass from when she’d bucked him off. He usually didn’t make the mistake of misjudgment. Not with horses, anyway. Thinking she was ready for that step had been a rookie move. But his mind hadn’t been on it all afternoon. Not since coming back with Seth. Seth had taken off for the hospital, and Carter used work as an excuse.

Seth.

Damn it. He’d crawled underneath Carter’s skin. And somehow Carter liked him there when he shouldn’t. Not if Seth would take off and live hours away. Carter couldn’t have his love interests coming in and out of Izzy’s life. Seth’s history of no communication weighed on his mind, making him second-guess asking Seth out on a date.

He should keep his distance, but doing so felt…painful to even think about. Still, he needed to get any romantic thoughts out of his head, at least for the time being.

He patted the horse one last time and then put the feed scoop in its place by the barrel before leaving the barn. The sun was low in the sky, indicating it was almost time for dinner. Guessing what Izzy wanted to eat was a lesson in mind-reading and if she didn’t have a nap, nothing made her happy.

The path was shaded and peaceful. The leaves would be full of color soon. Carter wondered if Seth would still be in town come fall or would he go back to his old life.

Eight times out of ten, Izzy met him at the door. She pressed her little face against the glass or yelled, “Daddy!” On the days she didn’t, she was still napping. Since he didn’t see her, he figured it was the latter.

Pops sat in the chair with one of his mystery novels. Judging by the cover, it was of the cozy variety. Pops switched between the sleuth-type crime novel and romance most of the time, but sometimes he picked up a novel with a funny title that was usually a play on words.

Adrianna sat on the couch with one of Pops’ sexier romance novels. The cover comprised a shirtless, muscular guy with fangs and green skin. She didn’t seem too interested in anything other than the words on the page. But without looking away, she said, “So I have a question.”

“If it’s about the sex in that book, don’t ask me.” Pops continued reading, all while pointing up the stairs and answering Adrianna’s question at the same time. He’d meant the hand gesture for Carter, so he headed up. Izzy would be in Carter’s old room.

“I just want to know if it’s realistic or not,” Adrianna asked.

Carter chuckled.

“Ask Seth. He’s your friend and gay.
