“No. I’ll send it to you by mail. This afternoon, after you meet me at the city library. You’re going to tell me everything you know about your great-aunt.”

“And you’ll give me back the ledger.”

She laughed. “Oh, no. I won’t be doing that. What if you felt compelled to unburden your conscience to your good friend? No, I’ll be keeping the ledger and the love notes.”

“I . . . Fiona is like a daughter to me. If you harm her . . .”

“Yes, I know how much your set values its daughters. Fiona will be unharmed.” She knew he needed a rationalization for betraying his friend. Let this be it, then, that Fiona wouldn’t be harmed by Dolly’s presence.

She slid off the banquette and stood. “This evening, at five, at the library,” she said. On her way out, she waved to the waiter, who smiled back.
