Sprinkle with Magic

I woke up Friday morning, and the first thing I did was reach for my phone.

One more day and I get to see your smiling face.

I grinned at Ryan’s text, my heart feeling fuller than my chest as I texted him back.

I can’t wait! It feels like forever since I last saw you.

We hadn’t seen each other since Tuesday night, when I finally found it in me to tear myself away from him and make the drive home. I found that every day I wasn’t near him was a day I missed him more than I’d ever missed anything. Ryan was always on my mind, from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed. Of course, this was fueled by the texts he sent me every morning to wake up to, and the long conversations we held over the phone every night. I was starting to forget what life was like before I met Ryan.

And I could not wait until Saturday!

I was a mixture of nerves and excitement over meeting his entire family. I wondered what his mother was like, or his stepdad who had inspired Ryan’s love for sailing. I even wondered about Ned despite Ryan’s obvious dislike for his stepbrother. What did they look like? How did they act? Would I like them? More importantly, would they like me?

Mona arrived at the house after I was showered and dressed. My mom was occupied in the living room with the television turned to some cooking show she’d seemed interested in, allowing me a moment to be able to get myself together for work. Mona hung up her coat, then put on an apron.

“Mija, you bake more, no?” Mona asked, her eyes hopeful. I shook my head with a smile.

“Sorry, Mona, I haven’t baked anything since those brownies. Did you like them?”

Mona’s eyes widened as she nodded, and I was certain that her cheeks got a little rosier.

“Si, mija. Muy bueno. You make more, okay?”

I laughed with a nod, finding humor in the earnestness with which she said it.

“I promise I’ll make you an entire batch for you and your husband,” I told her. Her cheeks got a little rosier as she grinned.

Once Mona was settled in with my mom, I left the house for The Cupcakery. The crowds had long since returned to normal from the previous weekend, with only our regulars, Harold and Tom, taking up space in the corner of the shop. I said my hellos, basking under their usual greetings of flattery, then set my things in the office. I came back out to the register area to grab a cup of coffee.

“How’s business,” I asked Posey. She nodded at the old timers with a smirk.

“Booming, as usual,” she said. I looked at the cases, alarmed at how empty they appeared. Only a few dessert choices were on the shelves, a ton of space existing between each one. I could tell that Bessie had only chosen the easiest desserts to bake this time, nixing all of the more elaborate treats.
