CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
It was almost time to do his work again, Mr. Last Chance thought, and he had the perfect subject in mind for his next interrogation. Heâd just dumped the body of the last man he killed. Perhaps they would find it tomorrow. He didnât think theyâd pick it up tonight, not in the dark place heâd chosen.
He was about to make another move, and he was going to make it nowâtonight.
A dark thrill coursed through him at the thought, but he justified the thrill by thinking of the importance of his work.
If only people would understand the weight of their decisions, and the impact that they had.
After all, he, too, had suffered that way. What he was doing was simply giving others the benefit of what he himself had learned.
"It seems like years, but it's only been a few months," he said in tones of surprise, as he opened the refrigerator. He'd intended to take out a beer, for some sustenance and hydration before heading out, but to his surprise, he found his attention distracted by the photos inside the magnetic frames on the door.
A smiling woman with smooth, dark hair in a ponytail, a face that was broad and pleasant and good natured. A young boy staring shyly at the camera. An older woman, her face lined and wise.
He'd known them all back in another time, another place, before he had made the reckless choice to change their lives for the better. Ha! How misguided, how foolhardy that had been. How murderous, in fact.
"You see how wrong that was?" he told himself in stern, warning tones. "What a bad mistake you made! And others want to do the same? No, no, no, not any longer. Definitely not on my watch!"
He shook himself as if shaking away those memories, took out a beer, popped the lid, and took a long drink. It tasted flat, but it was cold and wet, and that was what counted.
It was time to get ready. He had a job to do, and he had to keep himself in shape for it. He had no choice. If he didn't do his part, then he served no purpose.
"If only they would appreciate the lesson I'm teaching them," he murmured to himself.
He turned away from the refrigerator, headed out of the kitchen, and got into his car. This man that he was going to see next drank and socialized in the evenings, in a bar that just happened to be close to where Mr. Last Chance's current abode was. Just a few blocks away, in fact.
He drove through the night, easing the car along, not wanting to attract any attention to himself. Luckily, he was one of those who enjoyed the journey as much as the destination. He smiled as he completed the leisurely drive.
It wasn't long before he was parking on the side of the road and walking toward the bar. There were a few people there; it was a small neighborhood setup, with a couple
