CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

"So, these crimes have to be linked to the railway somehow. It’s just a case of finding out what the common factor is," Caitlin summarized what they knew as she swung the car onto the highway. Thank goodness the storm was holding off. The sky was midnight black, the morning was only grudgingly holding sway over a winter apocalypse, but for now, they were able to drive the distance.

"Yes. I mean, we both thought it was related to this accident, but if there are other things in common, it’s important to look at them, too. And if Miles Prentice is a toxic boss that got fired because of employees banding together against him, that’s a very strong motivator in my book," Nathan agreed. “You can totally see why a guy like that might hold a grudge, and get more and more bitter over the years.”

Harker Lumber was a big firm, set in between the highway and a massive expanse of forest. Definitely a good location for a firm that Caitlin estimated had premises occupying close to ten acres.

They got hard hats from the security guard, and walked to the fenced off area beyond, where a small gate let them through onto a walkway to the yard itself.

Her hard hat felt like a shell on her head, but at least it was shielding her to some extent from the spattering sleet that was now falling in the many open areas of this lumber yard. The scream of metal saws and the rattle of machinery filled the air as they walked.

The receiving area was a large shed that looked like it was a gigantic hangar, with an office area on the far side. Beyond was a large, fenced off yard where trucks were parked, and men were unloading a stack of crates.

They walked in, showing their badges to the man nearest the entrance door.

"Where can we find Mr. Prentice?" Caitlin asked, raising her voice to a shout to be heard over the nearby noise.

"He's that way, I think. Big guy, beard, red hair," he said, pointing to the opposite end of the yard.

Caitlin had the idea that only the final part
