An hour later, Tori called her sister to let her know what had happened to the bunkhouse. Josie had seen Dane’s wrath in LA, so she could imagine the destruction.

“I think you should come home. Dane is dangerous and I don’t want you hurt.”

“No, if I give up now, we could lose everything. I believe we can make money from renting to anglers. But I need to delay the opening for another week and clean up. Maybe by then, Dane will make a mistake and show himself.”

“I hate to think of you there alone.”

Tori walked to the open cabin door and saw Logan putting the last of the pickets on the railing. Her heart fluttered when he paused and looked up at her. Quickly, she turned away. “I’m not alone, Josie. Logan is here.”

There was a pause, then her sister said, “Hold on a second.”

Then Tori heard another voice, “Tori, this is your father.”

“Oh, hi, Colt.”

“I’m sorry I left you such a mess there. I’ve neglected the Colton Creek.”

“The conditions is not that bad.” She went on to explain, ”Nate and Logan have taken very good of the place. The cabin is wonderful and Logan has been fixing the porch.”

“The ranch isn’t as important as you are. You’re not safe there, Tori. Josie’s right, you should come home.”

“I’m fine, Colt. Really. Logan is an ex-police officer. He knows how to handle this situation, and Sheriff Harris is helping, too.”

“But this Buckley guy is unstable.”

“Please, Dad.” The thought of leaving made her heart ache. “I love being here in Rachel’s cabin. I plan to dig deeper into research on our family and learn more about how they come to settle here.”

There was a pause, then Colt said, “I have to say, it’s been a long time since you sounded this happy.”

“I truly love it here at the homestead.” She also told him about all her plans for running organic cattle.

“Is McNeely around?”

“Yes, he’s working on the porch.”

“Good. Let me talk to him.”

Tori walked outside to Logan and held out her cell phone. “Colt wants to talk to you.”

Logan removed his work gloves and put the phone to his ear. “Yes, sir.” He walked to the far end of the porch. Tori wanted to follow, but knew that if her father wanted her to know what they were saying, he would have told her. A few minutes later, Logan came back and handed her the phone.

“What?” she asked.

He shrugged. “Your father just wanted to know if I could handle the situation.”

Great, that was all she needs. “Has he assigned you as my bodyguard? What’s he paying you?”

Logan knew Tori would be upset, but Colt had every right to be worried about his daughter. “He didn’t ask me to be your bodyguard and money never came up.”

Tori sighed. “See, this is all getting out of hand. I should just take off where no one can find me, including Dane.”

She marched back into the cabin.

Before she could shut the door, Logan followed her inside.
