My Instagram account was born the same day I was, or seventeen years later anyway. That’s right, on September 8 for my seventeenth birthday in Michigan, I was given my first iPhone. I was given it in a rather creative way as well, which seemed fitting. My host family took me out to lunch and before I knew it they all started singing “Happy Birthday” as a waitress walked toward me with a tray and an upside-down bowl, which I assumed was hiding a slice of cake. I took the bowl off and embarrassingly screamed loudly as I saw not cake, but an iPhone. I had been wanting one for years and an iPhone is probably the only thing that could’ve been under that bowl that beats cake. Because . . . cake. YUM!

It wasn’t even so much wanting an iPhone as wanting the ability to have an Instagram account so that I could finally start @colour_me_creative. The minute I set up my new phone I went straight to the app store and downloaded Instagram, already planning what my first post would be. I was beyond excited to start sharing my art on a whole new platform. As I was learning how the app worked, I came across one of my drawings on the popular page. Confused, I pressed it and saw that an account with a large following had posted it. I commented a nice Thank you for posting my drawing and to my surprise the account responded, telling me that they would be happy to repost it with credit, and they did just that. My account grew to over sixteen thousand followers in just a few days and soon enough I was making the popular page on my own.

That was when I knew my dream of inspiring people had really taken off. I made it my mission to post a new drawing at least once a day and before I knew it, even celebrities started taking notice. I’ll never forget the day Keegan Allen (Toby from Pretty Little Liars) commented, followed, reposted, and then made one of my drawings his profile picture for a few months. Once he had noticed my art, other celebrities started to as well, such as Chloë Moretz, Tyra Banks, Lauren Conrad, Bethany Mota, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Cody Simpson, and Peyton List, to name a few.
