Admission
An unintimidating 39 percent of the 6,269 applicants for a place in the Class of 2022 were successful, but that number hardly tells the story of how competitive the Oberlin admissions process really is. Admitted students possessed middle-50 percent test scores of 30-34 on the ACT and 1320-1520 on the SAT. The average weighted GPA was 4.0, and the average unweighted GPA was 3.7. An overwhelming 91 percent of students ranked in the top quarter of their high school classes, 65 percent placed in the top 10 percent, and 21 percent were in the top 1 percent. Twenty-nine percent of those accepted went on to enroll in the college. Of those who joined the college, the mid-50 percent SAT range was 1280-1480, and 54 percent placed in the top decile of their graduating class.
Standardized test scores, GPA, class rank, and the rigor of one’s secondary school record are the four factors weighted most heavily in the process. Secondary factors include essays, recommendations, talent/ability, character/personal qualities, and the seemingly polar opposite categories of legacy and first-generation applicants. Those who apply via early decision enjoy a 49 percent acceptance rate and account for roughly one-third of each incoming class. Oberlin is definitely a college where the self-selecting applicant pool results in a deceptively high acceptance rate. Make no mistake—you need to bring extremely strong grades to the table (only 14 percent of enrolled high school freshmen possessed GPAs under 3.25) and strong standardized test scores (only 7 percent had SAT reading scores under 600). Applying early is a worthwhile maneuver for those clamoring to spend the next four years in rural Ohio at this liberal arts gem. The ED acceptance rate is 49 percent compared with 35 percent in the regular round.
